V & A Waterfront’s Market on the Wharf
For many
years now, one of the few shortcomings of the Cape Town food scene has been the absence of
a good, reliable and consistent source of fresh produce, especially where meat
and fish are concerned. With such an abundance of fresh natural produce on our
doorstep, it seems counter intuitive that for some in Cape Town (especially in
the CBD), the reality of “fresh produce” consists of a trip to your local Pick
and Pay or Woolies.
As a child
growing up in a small Northern Cape
community, I was blessed to experience the (dying) art of preparing your own
sausages, mince and chops from whole carcasses sold from numerous local
butcheries. Apart from solving your carnivorous cravings for the next couple of
months, it is also much, much cheaper.
So, what
is a meat lover like me to do in a beautiful, yet butchery-barren town? Yes, of
course we have magnificent local markets that to an extent, solves my
predicament, but more often than not, these markets are over-crowded and only
operational one day of the weekend.
Well
finally, my fare-dominated dreams have been answered. Situated under the
looming shadow of Table
Mountain and stunning
surroundings of one of the few operational waterfronts in the world, is the
V&A Waterfont Market on the Wharf.
In what
promises to be the largest fresh produce and prepared food market in South Africa , Market on the Wharf enables Cape Town to be on par
with international cities in its offering of an authentic organic and fresh
food destination.
Its vendor
mix include a butchery, fishmongers, bakers, confectioners, dairy products,
fruit & vegetables, olives, herbs & spices, delicatessen products,
nuts, tea & coffee, condiments and other specialty stores, such as wine
merchants, fresh fruit juices, flowers etc. All vendors will have to meet
specific standards for every produce item and guarantee the freshness of their
products.
I can
truly recommend that you pay a visit to this amazing addition to the Mother City ’s
culinary scene…they even have outdoor seating for some alfresco dining. Perfect
for a lazy breakfast or lunch with the family.
