Spring has finally sprung!
What I adore about springtime is the promise of new beginnings. Just walking up the pathway to our place, your eyes are assaulted by the beautiful colours of the new blooms, and the Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow hypnotises you with their gentle aromas.
It is time to wave goodbye (unfortunately) to hearty, warm and satisfying stews, and to say hello to lighter and more waist-friendly dishes. Yes, summer is approaching, and that means bearing your pale, winter body in a bikini again.
Just because you have to eat healthier, doesn’t mean you have to jeopardise taste! I say down with cardboard crackers and tasteless steamed vegetables! Say yes to tasty seasonal produce you can whip up into delicious AND healthy dishes! All you need is a bit of culinary creativity!
Fruits and vegetables in season:
Bananas, blueberries, cherries, kumquats, pineapples, raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, naartjies, ruby grapefruit
Asparagus, zucchini (baby marrows), beetroot, cauliflower, cucumber, green beans, mange tout, mushrooms, peas, spinach, sugar snap peas, fennel, sweet potatoes, turnips
Next time I will provide you with some inspiring weekday recipes utilising these produce, as well as a few French recipes in the second instalment of “A culinary journey through France .”
Until then readers, happy cooking!
