Restaurant of the month: Woodlands Eatery
Woodlands Eatery
Set amongst the majestic pine trees of Deer park , this aptly named restaurant beckons any inquisitive passers-by to take a peek inside. The quirky yet unpretentious interior sets everyone at ease, leading your eyes from the multi-coloured, vintage lampshades, to the beautifully exposed red brick walls and miss-matched chairs.
Everything about this place has a recipe to succeed. And I haven’t even come to the food yet. Whether you have an appetite of ten grown men, or only feel like a light, fresh meal, Woodlands has a great seasonal menu that is sure to silence any craving.
The menu is based mainly on bistro-type dishes, and promises diners a creative and mouth-watering dining experience, without having to break the bank.
The lunch time menu offers a few gems, such as Larry’s cheese burger, served with roasted baby potatoes (R55). The chickpea, butternut and lentil burger (R40) offers an equally satisfying experience, even if you are a carnivore at heart! The burger is served with roasted sweet potatoes, which gives a pleasant echo of the sweet, earthy taste of the chickpea and lentil patty.
To start off your dinner at Woodlands, the simple yet sumptuous feta and garlic pizza bread (R25) will leave enough room for the pleasures to follow. The fresh fig and gorgonzola salad (R58) is one of my favourites, and is served on a bed of greens with raspberry dressing. The sweetness of the fig, together with the richness of the cheese and the tartness of the raspberry dressing, causes a frenzy amongst your taste buds.
Main courses include classics such as sirloin steak (a very respectable R90) marinated in white wine, paprika and garlic, topped with roasted cherry tomatoes, rocket and roasted baby potatoes. YUM!
Woodlands have also become quite legendary because of their pizzas. Served on a nice thin and crispy base, toppings such as the Tuscan lamb (R70) have had many grown men cry of delight!
Last, but certainly not least, is the range of luxurious desserts on offer. The oh-so-naughty chocolate fondant (R38) delivers a punch of rich, dark and gooey deliciousness, which already has me salivating just thinking about it. If you prefer a lighter yet equally satisfying alternative, Woodlands offer a tasty selection of truffles (R10).
