Namaste Chandani
The delicious Thali |
Amongst
the hustle and bustle of Woodstock ’s
Roodebloem street ,
lies the recently established restaurant, Namaste Chandani. This Indian gem is
the brainchild of reputable restaurateurs Jagdish Vanzara and Dina de Bruyn,
who is also the owners of the original Chandani restaurant, just down the road.
As with
the Chandani restaurant, Namaste Chandani is dedicated towards educating the
Western palette to the tastes and traditions of authentic Indian cuisine. Famous for its vegetarian meals, Namaste
Chandani also caters for vegans and meat-lovers alike. What sets Namaste
Chandani apart from its big sister is that it has a more relaxed atmosphere,
and unbeatable prices.
On the
menu you can expect anything from the most delicately flavoured Masala Dosas
(crispy lentil flour pancakes stuffed with spicy potato) to the enticing
varieties of the ancient Thali. Thali refers to a whole meal consisting of an
assortment of dishes served on a tray. For a vegetarian Thali, you will get an
assortment of starters, 4 main courses (served with rice and 2 chappatis) and a
dessert for only R100.
Meat-lovers
can sink their teeth into a non-vegetarian Thali, consisting of vegetarian
starters, 2 veggie mains and 2 meat mains (also served with rice and 2 chappatis)
and dessert for only R115.
Also on
offer is a variety of Indian breakfasts, ranging from R25 – R35, and includes
spicy scrambled eggs served with a bread roll and deep fried lentil and coconut
balls served with sambal and coconut chutney.
If the
idea of a spicy breakfast sets your stomach in a knot, a more Westernised menu
is available to break your fast with.
One of my
steadfast requirements for returning to a restaurant has always been friendly
and personalised service coupled with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I find
that these sentiments are clearly reflected in Namaste, which in Hinduism means
‘I bow to the divine in you”. I therefore take a bow to Namaste Chandani, and
thank them for an eating experience of divine proportions.
Namaste Chandani is open from
Monday to Saturday between 9:00 to 15:00 and again from 18:00 to late, and
Sundays from 09:00 to 15:00.
